A skilled addition
A visiting professor is a person pursuing a career in professorship or research outside Université Laval, or who possesses equivalent skills in a specific discipline, and is employed or assigned at Université Laval for a limited period of time. Visiting professors engage in the same professorial activities, under the same conditions of academic freedom, as those given to other professors.
Want to invite a visiting professor?
A visiting professor is hired for a limited period of time which is (or equal to) a maximum of two years, full-time. The Unit in coordination with the welcoming department must provide a favorable reference prior to hiring a visiting professor.
5 steps to process
Present the visiting professor’s file at the Unit Assembly.
The department director must send the Unit’s decision to the Dean, or the Dean of Faculty, to obtain favorable feedback.
The first two steps must completed before officially inviting a visiting professor.
Officially invite the visiting professor by sending him/her a letter that includes the following information: a brief description of proposed pedagogical activities or research, arrival and departure dates, compensation if applicable and specify that he/she must obtain a work permit before his/her arrival and for the duration of his/her stay. This is obligatory.
Provide the following documents to the Vice President of Human Resources:
- a letter from the department director confirming the agreement
- a copy of the Unit Assembly minutes, approving this commitment
- a recommendation from the dean of faculty
- the invitee’s letter of invitation and resume
Once a favorable response has been given by the Vice President of Human Resources (VRRH), the department is responsible for preparing the visiting professor’s employment contract.
If there is no intended compensation, the contract will be for $ 0.
Note that a work permit is required even if there is no compensation.
