Supporting research and education in ornamental horticulture
The goal of the W.-H.-Perron Chair of Education and Research in Ornamental Horticulture is to help fund university education and research in the field of ornamental horticulture. More specifically, it aims to:
- Promote the training of specialists in floriculture, plant nurseries or sod at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels
- Continue research, both practical and fundamental, on the governance of ornamental plant farming and control of diseases and pests, taking into account Quebec’s production needs while respecting the environment and available resources
- Offer training and professional development for people in the field who are interested in a university education
At its outset, the chair helped recruit a professor in Ornamental Horticulture and later granted several scholarships for excellence to undergraduate students, financial aid scholarships for master's and doctoral students, funding for a few specific research projects and development projects at the Roger Van den Hende Botanical Garden.
Chair's partners
Following a donation from the W. H. Perron company and the Perron family, generous contributions from horticulturalists, friends of ornamental horticulture, the Fédération interdisciplinaire de l’horticulture ornementale du Québec (FIHOQ) as well as from staff members and graduates of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences (FSAA), it has been possible to complete many research projects and to accumulate capital of over $1.4 million.
The objective is to increase the funds to over $2.5 million, which is possible thanks to renewed support from the FIHOQ and generous donors.
