The Potential Held by Genomic Research Showcased at Parliament

Researcher Steve Labrie presents his research on the application of metagenomics to cheesemaking.
On February 22, Genome Canada hosted the “Genomics on the Hill” event at the federal parliament with the goal of demonstrating the promising solutions offered by genomics research and its applications.
The work of researcher Steve Labrie, a professor in the Department of Food Sciences and INAF member, figured among the 12 projects presented. Representing Genome Quebec and accompanied by Manon Duquenne from the Agropur Dairy Cooperative, Dr. Labrie demonstrated the usefulness of genomics in the agri-food sector and, more specifically, in cheesemaking. With support from Genome Canada and Agropur, his research team is currently working on determining the genomic profile of the rind of soft cheeses. Their findings will help optimize ageing and production conditions, reduce industry losses and extend shelf life.
More than 200 politicians, including a number of ministers, senators and deputies, participated in the demonstration.
